Title 1 is a federally funded program which provides instructional personnel, supplies, and equipment to students in grades K-5. This program focuses on providing highly qualified personnel to work with students in math and reading.

There are eight Title 1 schools in the district: K. R. Hanchey Elementary, Carver Elementary, Pine Wood Elementary, East Beauregard Elementary, Singer High School, Merryville High School, and South Beauregard Elementary.

The implementation of instructional technology is a primary goal of this program. Computer labs are utilized at each Title 1 School. Reading and math software provides reinforcement of skills as well as prescriptive lessons in a motivational environment.

The Accelerated Reader Program is used to enhance the reading process. This program is a computer/web based recreational reading process which allows each student to move at his/her own pace. Recognition is given to all participating students and incentives are awarded.

A major emphasis of Title 1 is parental involvement. The computer lab located at the Title 1 Center as well as Carver Elementary and K. R. Hanchey Elementary are utilized after scheduled school hours to encourage parents to spend time with their children in a rich learning environment.

Professional development for teachers and paraprofessionals is another important facet of the Title 1 program. Training is provided in the areas of communication, reading, math, and computer-assisted instruction.

Early intervention is the latest emphasis of the Title 1 program. Elementary students at-risk of meeting the literacy requirements necessary to succeed in school are provided additional instruction/strategies in reading by qualified personnel.
